Friends and Family,
We received an update from our Bethany caseworker this morning, explaining that a law had changed in ukraine making it possible for "out of region" (ie, couples not from Kiev) to pursue a domestic adoption before Anastasia was eligible for the International Database in September (when we would have adopted her). We were assured that the orphanage director did everything she could to dissuade this family from adopting her, knowing that we intended to come for her. The director had successfully dissuaded at least ten other families from doing the same thing. This family persisted.
We're heartbroken. At some point soon we'll contact everyone who has been praying for us and supporting us through this...and tell them that it's officially over. Before that, though, we're going to send a letter and a family picture via email to our Bethany contacts, and perhaps the judge, to deliver to this family, asking them to reconsider. We're sure this won't work, but we want to try.
We'll follow up next week to ask the obvious logistical questions of what happens to all of the money we've spent thus far. We're done with this process (adopting)...so we won't be putting it toward a future adoption. I don't think we can go through all of this again.
Thanks,
Ted and Kristin
